Sonoran hot dogs
Like many of you, around the age of 16 I decided that hot dogs were the sort of disgusting, bland, mass-processed food I'd never force down my gullet again. After discovering Sonoran hot dogs - that is, fried to a crunch and covered in everything from mayonnaise to jalapenos - I, er, stand corrected. They may make you feel a little queasy about 30 seconds after you eat them, but those are 30 of the best seconds you'll ever have.
'She's All That'
I could name guilty-pleasure movies until the end of time, but this sweet-natured 1997 teen-movie take on "Pygmalion," featuring Rachael Leigh Cook as an adorable bespectacled beatnik, beats them all. I once insisted, to a crowd of film majors, that it was the best movie of the '90s.
'We are the World'
I'm probably the only person left on Earth who likes this awful 1985 mother-of-all-charity-records, featuring everyone from Bob Dylan to Dan Ackroyd to Cyndi Lauper screaming their lungs out. The line readings range from amazing (Ray Charles) to horrible (everyone else). I've always read the lyrics (penned by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson) as an unconscious parody of rock-star egotism, what with lines like "When you're down and out/ and there seems no hope at all ... " There's something endearingly stupid and Spinal Tap-esque about describing the plight of starving Ethiopians as "down and out," as if every human experience could only be described in ancient rock clichés.

Actually Cyndi Lauper's fantastic on this (the only reason I bought this album was for her and Springsteen, etc.
Billy Joel did say in a recent interview
that Cyndi whispered in his ear that this song sounds
like a Pepsi commercial. (Continued…)
